Diamond Types: Natural, Lab Grown and Moissanite

Today you can choose between three popular center stones. They are made differently, and they are priced differently, but all three can make a beautiful ring.

Natural diamonds

Formed deep in the earth over a very long time and then mined. Prices reflect rarity and the cost of mining.

Lab grown diamonds

Grown in a controlled environment using the same carbon structure as natural diamonds. They have the same chemical, physical and optical properties, and they are graded on the same 4 C's scale. A lab grown diamond is a real diamond, usually at a lower price for the same size and quality.

Moissanite

A different gemstone, made of silicon carbide. It is slightly softer than diamond but very durable, with a lot of fire, and it costs less again. See our guides on moissanite for more detail.

How to choose

  • Want the traditional route: natural diamond.
  • Want a diamond with more size for the budget: lab grown diamond.
  • Want maximum sparkle and value: moissanite.

Whichever you choose, ask for a grading certificate from an independent lab.
